Hello and welcome back to our Scotland adventure.
Today, October 27th, is the 35th day of Fall. I’ll bet you are thinking October’s Bright Blue weather. It should be at least 30 more days before it gets REALLY cold, shouldn’t it? Well, this morning about 5:30 am I was awakened by the sound of sleet and hail hitting the skylight just inches from my head. I mean it was really flying…. and hitting hard… and making a big racket. After about 15 minutes it died down and there was just a little wind around the cottage.
Then about 6:00 am it started again. This time with a vengeance! The Sleet! The Hail! The Wind! The Noise.
This kept on and off til I got up at 8:15 am. By that time the sky was looking, if not blue exactly, at least less gray. An d there was a small hint (just a hint) of the sun peeking out.
We had breakfast and tidied the cottage a bit. There was some laundry to do and some unpacking to finish after our week on the road. Then we decided to go to the center to the co-op to get some groceries. Before we left the house I considered wearing my Frogg Toggs over my clothes. Frogg Toggs are wind and water repellent. They keep me warm and dry. When I wear them. I decided that the storm was probably over and left with just my fleece hoodie, my winter coat, my long scarf wrapped twice around my head and my nice warm gloves.
The sea behind our house was wild! BIG waves and whitecaps as far as you could see. The water was hitting the seawall so hard that the spray was flying higher than the roofs of the houses. It made quite a scene for our walk.
We did a few errands:
1. asking about how to get/send mail in the Post Office
2. buying a pair of boot laces
3. checking some books in one of the local “bits and bobs” stores
It was noon by then so we decided to get some lunch. Our favorite place, Lili’s Cafe, was closed. We opted to go across the street to a little cafe in a former church, re-purposed as a series of shops. The Butternut squash soup accompanied by a drink made of Elderflower and Pomegranate. You know it’s bad with the cook is wearing an insulated jacket with a fur-lined hood.
Then a short walk to the co-op. I mentioned to Anne that I thought I felt a drop of rain, or something. But off we went. We had to get home. As we left the co-op the skies opened up. Rain.. Hail.. Sleet… Wind!! It is lucky that we were going down the hill, there is no way I could have walked against that wind up hill. At one point I tried walking backwards just to keep the sleet out of my face. By the time we got to the corner, I was soaked from the knees down and the neck up. And COLD. Did I say cold? Should have worn the Frogg Toggs.
Got home, soaked and frozen. Stripped off the wet clothes. Got into bed to warm up and finished the novel I was reading. Luckily my bed has an electric warmer. At least I didn’t freeze to death!
When I said 35th day of Fall, what I really meant was 56 days till Winter. It’s gonna be interesting!!
Bye for now. See you next time. Till then, stay warm.
I hope Anne and Fiesta have Frog Toggs too. Ask the cook where
he got his fur lined outfit, and get some of those too.
Remember, a big kettle of soup can get you by cold days without going outside.
Am enjoying all your posts. Keep them coming.
