TV. What Do We Watch? You Asked. (26)

Well, nobody actually asked, but that’s what I’m talking about today.

Hi, Happy to see you back.

There are 3 shows that we watch, plus the Scottish News (STV) at 5:00.

The first one, Pointless, is a game show.  But unlike other game shows, it is the low score that wins.  Other than that, it is kinda like Family Feud.   They start with a prize of  £1000. There are four teams of two who compete in two initial rounds.

They ask some survey group some general knowledge questions like:

“Name a country that does not have consecutive vowels in its name.”

There are lots of them, so that should be easy.  However, it is not enough to get a RIGHT answer, you have to get the answer least given by their survey group. Each team gives an answer and they check to see how many of the survey group gave that answer.  If the answer is wrong, you get 100 points (not good).  If it is right, but no one gave that answer, you get 0, a pointless answer. (good). If it is right and some of the survey group gave the answer, you get that number.  Between 1 and 100.  Every time a team gets a pointless answer, then increase the prize by £500.

The team with the highest score after two questions is out.  The team with the highest score after the next two questions is out.  Then the two teams left go head-to-head.

Finally, there will be one team that wins two out of three questions.  For the final question, there are three questions and they can give any three answers to any of them.  They can give 3 answers to one question, or one answer to each question, or any other combination of answers.   But,  they have to get a pointless answer or they go home with nothing.  It doesn’t matter that  they won the game and beat all the other teams, they go home with nothing…Well they do get the “Coveted”  Pointless trophy, and the money rolls over till the next day.

One thing I did notice.  Pointless makes an effort to include everyone.  There are people of color and with disabilities, both visible and not-so-visible.  We don’t seem to see that much on our quiz shows.  Although I admit that I don’t watch them much, so maybe they do.

I guess my point is this.  Would Americans get on a show where they are most likely to win nothing?  And if they did win, where it could be as little as £1000 ? And would American audiences find that entertaining when they are used to prizes of $1,000,000.00?  Or even more?

What do you  think?

Let me know and I will see you later.

  1. Maybe Americans are bored by now with our quiz shows. They’re all alike. Let’s import Pointless to the USA. We need something new. You and Anne could be the quiz masters. I can hardly wait!
